We are shaped by forces we didn’t choose, guided by people we may never meet, and changed by moments we never saw coming.
Here’s the Thing is a collection of reflections gathered across a life — as a man, a husband, and a father. Some lessons were earned through mistakes and near misses. Others were borrowed from strangers, mentors, history, and family.
A cancer diagnosis at forty-five reframed what mattered. Small resentments lost their urgency. Ordinary moments mattered. Inside are short reflections, stories, and philosophical fragments about inheritance, fear and faith, history and family. Life feels random while living it. With distance it becomes something more. Something fragile.
Something worth treasuring.

Just got my copy a few days ago. There is a lot of good stuff here, though I think it’s probably most useful for younger adult readers. Even so, I’ve enjoyed it very much so far.

Very readable and enjoyable. Worth sharing with the young people in your life.
