About Portage Press
Portage is an independent publishing company dedicated to ideas-driven literature and thoughtful, enduring books. We publish works that engage deeply with philosophy, intellectual history, cultural criticism, and personal transformation—writing that invites readers to reflect on the ideas and traditions that shape our world.
Our aim is to bring together writers and readers through books that illuminate complex subjects with clarity, depth, and imagination. Whether through nonfiction, literary essays, poetry, or short fiction, Portage seeks work that combines literary craft with intellectual seriousness and a lasting engagement with the life of the mind.
Our Approach
A portage is the act of transmission over land between navigable waters. It is a bridge between journeys—an essential passage that connects one route to another.
We believe publishing performs a similar role. Books carry ideas across boundaries: between disciplines, between cultures, and between generations. A well-made book allows a writer’s insights to travel far beyond their original moment, reaching readers in new places and times.
The name Portage reflects this purpose. Our books are meant to transport ideas and open new paths of understanding. Rather than chasing trends, we seek books with lasting value—works that contribute to the ongoing conversation of ideas.
Looking Ahead
Portage is building a catalog of books that readers will return to again and again: works that inform, challenge, and inspire.
We are proud to work with authors whose writing reflects curiosity, care, and intellectual ambition.
Our Areas of Interest:
Philosophy & Intellectual History
Works that explore enduring questions about knowledge, ethics, and human understanding, as well as the history of ideas that have shaped intellectual life.
Cultural Criticism & Essays
Insightful essays that examine literature, art, society, and contemporary culture with clarity, depth, and originality.
Science & Technology
Books that illuminate scientific discovery and technological change, examining how they shape our understanding of the world and our place within it.
Thoughtful Literary Works
Fiction and literary writing that combines artistic craft with intellectual depth, offering readers meaningful and lasting engagement.
For Authors
Portage welcomes submissions from writers whose work aligns with our mission of publishing ideas-driven literature and thoughtful, enduring books. We are especially interested in writing that engages deeply with philosophy, intellectual history, cultural criticism, and the broader life of the mind.
Across genres, we seek work that combines intellectual depth with strong literary craft—writing that explores meaningful questions, rewards careful reading, and contributes to ongoing cultural and intellectual conversations.
Most of the books we publish are selected through our annual manuscript competitions and writing awards. These opportunities allow us to discover new voices and identify manuscripts that resonate strongly with our editorial vision.
Although our primary focus is on these submission opportunities, Portage does accept occasional book proposals and completed manuscripts. Submissions should include a brief description of the project, a short author biography, and a sample of the work.
For full details about our contests and submission opportunities, please see our Submissions Guidelines page.
