Portage
Publishing Platform & Literary Community
At Portage, we publish ideas-driven literature that connects disciplines, traditions, and generations. Like a portage linking two waterways, our books serve as bridges—carrying philosophy, cultural reflection, and intellectual exploration from writers to readers, from the past into the present.
About Portage
Portage is an independent publishing company dedicated to ideas-driven literature and thoughtful, enduring books.
We believe that publishing is more than producing books—it is the act of carrying ideas across distance and time. The works we publish engage deeply with philosophy, intellectual history, and cultural criticism, inviting readers into serious reflection and rewarding careful reading.
Our mission is to connect writers and readers through books that explore important ideas and contribute meaningfully to the ongoing conversation of intellectual and cultural life.

Here’s the Thing
Wide release April 13th, 2026
By J. Wolf Martin
Here’s the Thing is a collection of reflections about the quiet forces that shape a life—time, family, mistakes, history, and the unexpected moments that reveal what truly matters.
Written in short, thoughtful segments, the book blends personal storytelling, historical reflection, and philosophical observation. Jeramiah Martin draws from his experiences as a father, husband, and lifelong student of human nature to explore the lessons gathered through years of trial, celebration, regret, and growth.
Moving between intimate moments and larger historical echoes—from family memories to stories spanning centuries—the essays reveal how life is rarely a single narrative, but a mosaic of small realizations that slowly construct something meaningful.
Honest, reflective, and quietly hopeful, Here’s the Thing invites readers to pause, reflect, and reconsider what truly matters in the time we’re given.
